What Locals Say about Moss Beach

  • Rosa Heyer
"The commute is not the best. Without traffic it’s about 30 min but if there’s any kind of delay or accident, it can be an hour or more. "
  • Bnabanto
"Halloween is wonderful. Blocks get shut down to traffic and the residents put a lot of work into having great houses. The community is wonderful. It’s very safe. And being so close to the ocean is terrific "

"termites are everywhere! dont buy here! you'll have to tent your house every other year and its super expensive!"
  • Cid Y. R.
"I've lived here since 1988 and would really miss the charm, open space and hiking trails overlooking the Fitzgerald Marine Reserve were I to ever move. People here are friendly and interested in a sustainable lifestyle. There is a small hospital & Emergency room on Marine Blvd.(Seaton Coastside), and the San Mateo Sheriff's Coastside Substation is here too, with excellent response times, and interacting with residents in a professional, courteous fashion as well. There are some affordable housing opportunities at the Pillar Ridge Manufactured Home Park on Airport Blvd., but for the most part, the community consists of professionals who either work from home or commute to San Francisco or Silicon Valley. A local attraction is the historic Moss Beach Distillery known for it's ghost, "The Blue Lady"as featured by Unsolved Mysteries. Most of all, Moss Beach is home to the infamous surfing wave know to Big Wave surfers as MAVERICKS. There is a contest yearly, if the waves are right and the Surfer who discovered it in 1975, while still in High School, Jeff Clark, is still very much involved. Two movies (at least have featured Mavericks, one starring Gerard Butler called "Chasing Mavericks" , about the life of Jay Moriarity and another "Men who ride Mountains" .Moss Beach is right next to Princeton Harbor where there are restaurants, sport fishing boats and fish markets to name a few attractions. Just to the North of Moss Beach is Montara Mountain offering mountain bikers a challenge as well as hikers, all the while providing expansive views of the Pacific Ocean . Montara has similar charm and attractions, especially the Point Montara Lighthouse and Hostel. The Coastside has the feeling of the old New England town where I grew up, Duxbury, MA. with older beach cottage-style homes sprinkled amongst the grand, more recently constructed ones. San Francisco's cultural amenities are 20 miles away. Art museums, Theaters, Opera & Symphony, Black tie balls & concerts in GG Park."

"I love waking up in this beautiful natural area with all the great views. I especially enjoy hearing the ocean at high-tide, and watching the hawks and other wonderful wildlife, including deer, foxes, and rabbit and horses. Great place for hiking. Lots of open space here."

"Lived in Montara for a year. I love this place! I don't know enough about schools around here or about parks and rec. But- this really is a low crime reasonably priced residential are with lots of natural and, as of now, undeveloped areas. Lots of horses in the back of the town. Many very friendly people! Many, many dogs, mostly very well behaved. Lots of wildlife- coyotes, hawks, rabbits, snakes, raccoons - all of the usual suspects, and more. Many restaurants with a few being local. If you're willing to got to HMB or SF, there's any restaurant you can think of. Same thing for shopping. There's a one acre lot minimum requirement in the back of the valley - where the prices a little higher, but there's some great stuff back here! There's something here for almost everyone."
  • Cherie m. 6.
"Moss Beach is a lovely community on the San Mateo coast. 7 miles north of Half Moon Bay and 20 miles south of San Francisco. "
  • Cherie m. 6.
"Located halfway between Half Moon Bay and Pacifica, Moss Beach is a quiet coastal town. Nearby tide pools, beaches, and walking trails add to the area's charm. Foggy summers yield to warm Indian summers with tourists coming "over the hill" for pumpkins. Some airplane noise from small aircraft at Half Moon Bay Airport is to be expected, but the airport restaurant is the best place for breakfast on the Coastside."
